Update on donations to The Trevor Project

Hi all! I just wanted to make an update/transparency report on my promise to donate proceeds of certain listings to the Trevor Project.

If you don't know, the Trevor Project is a non-profit organization that aims to end suicide among lgbtq young people. They provide 24/7 access to counselors online and over the phone, public education on lgbtq issues, and more. If you're interested in the details of everything they do (or if you are in crisis and could benefit from access to a counselor) check out their mission plan or make your own special donation here: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/strategic-plan/

Currently, all calculated profits from pride flag pin set sales made on my shop are donated to the Trevor Project. With the help of your purchases we've raised a total of $216.68 so far!

Other organizations like to use language similar to “profits help x charity”, or “some proceeds go to x” to purposely obfuscate how much they are actually contributing because it’s such a low amount. I don’t want my shop to give that impression, so going forward I’m locking it in at $1 donated to the Trevor Project per sale on every pin set sale (and not just the pride flag sales). Additionally, I’ll now be including a small slip with some information about how to utilize The Trevor Project’s resources in every order containing pride flags.

Transparency Q&A:

How do you decide how much money to donate per order?

I've put together a "calculated profit" calculation that accounts for the cost of materials used, the cost of shipping, and etsy's fees. Every 3 months (or so) I go through all orders and count up how many pride flag orders were made, then multiply that number by my calculated profit. The resulting number is not the exact profit, but based on my math any error should result in an over-calculation of profit and not an under-calculation. I'd rather my math errors cause an over donation than an under donation, so I'm sure to always round up in my estimations. Calculating real profit is difficult, so this is the (admittedly imperfect) system I have been using thus far.

What is your calculated profit?

In the interest of transparency & trust, I've released the document I use to calculate my profit per order. You may view my calculation here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ipm4u-Q1Uxb-vgwbo5tkljIqhfnmIlN9Cuq6FUPgtqY/edit?usp=sharing

How do I know that you've really donated the money you have claimed to donate?

I’ve taken screenshots of my donation history as displayed on the trevor project website. If you’re interested in viewing it you may do so here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YVVQk2eyXK6HPrOnse-g6x9UGrOfRC1w?usp=share_link
