I hate my plastic mailers! (reducing waste)

As I've gotten higher and higher order volumes, I've come to hate my plastic mailers. I used to love the pretty blue color, but bringing a dozen single use plastic bags that'll be in the trash in 5 days to the post office has made me realize they're a little too wasteful. It's really a shame because (besides the pins) everything else about the packaging to strictly paper. My solution to the problem is to switch to paper padded mailers. I've found a great option (from ecoenclose) I'm going to start using as soon as I run out of my current stock of plastic mailers! It's made from 100% recycled material, Naturally biodegradable, and is just all together pretty sturdy. I originally thought these where out of budget for me, but I was surprised to see that if I ordered large quantities they're only $0.10 more expensive then my current solution. There are however a few draw backs, the main one being that these new mailers weigh 1.5 ounces whereas my old one...

Stickers coming soon!

Hi! I'm pleased to announce that stickers will be coming soon to my shop! I recently bought a sticker cutting machine & a bunch of sticker paper from different brands to experiment with. My partner (who I live with) is making all the sticker designs & all the profits from sales will be passed onto them. To separate what I make and what my partner makes we're calling their items part of the "Jollection" (Jo Collection). Before posting the listing we're sending out a test package to one of their family members in another state just to make sure our packaging in adequate before making any sales to customers. The listing should go up within this week, so keep your eyes up for that!

Parcel shipping only experimentation

Unfortunately due to recent inconsistencies in my current shipping method, I am looking to change to parcel shipping only. I'm very sad that I have to do this because it's what made my shop unique & cheaper then others. I'm always quite sad when I find out a package never arrived on time like it should, my shipping time is so long & I never know if something didn't get there ok until weeks after the buyer ordered. I have to admit, whenever I see an order come through with package shipping I feel a little bit of relief. Starting now, I'm knocking down all my listings to $3.00 & having etsy automatically calculate the shipping cost for sending the package as a parcel. This will leave the end product cost at about $6.80, up from $4.50 for most buyers. I still have about 20 orders using my original shipping method to send out. I'm sending all of them out tomorrow. The end of my experiment will be when the packages I send out tomorrow arrive. Depending on...

Extra pin being dropped for the time being

As you may know, I always send out an extra bonus pin along with my orders. From my perspective, it's not much more expensive to just include an extra pin in the package which is why I never sell individual pins and always include a bonus. In the interest of minimizing failed deliveries, I'm deciding to drop the extra 4th pin for the time being though. Because of my relatively unusual envelopes, every once in a while a usps employee decides my envelope aren't valid envelopes and returns the envelope back to me asking for additional postage to upgrade it to a package (usually about $3.50 extra on top of the already paid 1.26). In these instances, I just take the loss and send the package back out with tracking to ensure they get there ok. This has only happened about 1%-2% of the time, however in the past week I've had 1 instance of a late package and 1 instance of a package being returned back to me which is extremely unusual. My packages should be considered as a non-m...

Update on donations to The Trevor Project

Hi all! I just wanted to make an update/transparency report on my promise to donate proceeds of certain listings to the Trevor Project. If you don't know, the Trevor Project is a non-profit organization that aims to end suicide among lgbtq young people. They provide 24/7 access to counselors online and over the phone, public education on lgbtq issues, and more. If you're interested in the details of everything they do (or if you are in crisis and could benefit from access to a counselor) check out their mission plan or make your own special donation here: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/strategic-plan/ Currently, all calculated profits from pride flag pin set sales made on my shop are donated to the Trevor Project. With the help of your purchases we've raised a total of $216.68 so far! Other organizations like to use language similar to “profits help x charity”, or “some proceeds go to x” to purposely obfuscate how much they are actually contributing because it’s such a lo...
